NWO Ohio Tornado – Six Weeks Later…

Published by kmennell at 9:06 am under Hikes/Walks

I went for a walk at Oak Openings park in Toledo yesterday morning.  On June 5 2010, the tornado that went through northwest Ohio went through the park.  We had an opportunity to see where it took out the trees in the park.

It was amazing to see acres of trees uprooted and laying on their sides.  Pine trees that were once full are now stripped bare with their needles and branches thrown to the wind.  Along one trail, you could see to the horizon the destruction the wind did.

And then a few yards to the north and south – minimal damage.  The pictures don’t do the scene justice – I hope to get out at a later date and take some more pictures.

Wow. I hope I can get up there to see it. Ripping its way through the pine plantations is probably a good thing, and the toppling of other trees will likely improve the oak savanna habitat.
