Toledo Botanical Gardens/Schmuckers

Published by kmennell at 6:38 pm under Meetups

Today I took a visit to the Toledo Botanical Gardens.  This weekend was a plant sale as well.  The chance to purchase some of the plants from the garden.  The prices were very reasonable.  Unfortunately, I don’t need any right now.  Maybe in the spring.

I was amazed that something like this was in the middle of the city.  50 acres of landscaped gardens divided up into sections such as tea garden, herb, vegetable, grassland, and rose (plus many more).

We walked most of the park today.  I was unaware of the variety of plants that can be grown in this area.  There was a selection of cacti that are native to the NW Ohio area.  One of my favorites was the ornamental chili peppers (chilly chili).  The reds, oranges, and yellows made for a colorful display.

We were there for a few hours (and honestly could have spent a few hours more) and decided to head to lunch.

Schmucker’s is a Toledo landmark.  They have been around since 1948 and are in their third generation of family members running the location.  Open M-Sa 5am-11pm, they offer good food at good prices.  The main reason to go there though – the pies!  Everything from Apple and Cherry to Rhubarb and Key Lime.  The portions are more than enough to order a few and share with a group of friends.  I went with the chocolate peanut butter pie.

I needed a nap later. :)
